Intern of the School of Chinese Studies, Youth Program in China

Founded in New York City in 1926 by American educators John Dewey and Paul Monroe, and Chinese scholars Hu Shi (胡適) and Kuo Ping-Wen (郭秉文), China Institute of America is an internationally renowned U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China through programs in art, business, cuisine, culture, and education.
China Institute seeks an Education Youth Program Intern to support its youth education initiatives, with a focus on study programs for the youth between U.S. and China, and related initiatives including alumni engagement, along with other youth programs at China Institute. The intern will work closely with the Youth Programs team to assist in program planning, student recruitment, family communications, and outreach, as well as provide administrative and logistical support. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in education, international exchange, cross-cultural communication, and nonprofit program management.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planning and logistics for youth study programs in the U.S. and China, including scheduling, materials preparation, and event coordination.
- Support student recruitment efforts, including application review, interview scheduling.
- Help maintain communications with students and families by drafting updates, managing inquiries, and preparing orientation materials.
- Support curriculum design and development, including researching educational content, preparing teaching materials, and assisting with activity planning.
- Contribute to program marketing and outreach, including social media, newsletters, and promotional campaigns in collaboration with the Marketing team.
- Assist with data entry, payment tracking, and program reports.
- Conduct research on best practices for youth cultural exchange and alumni engagement.
- Provide on-site support at orientations, workshops, and events.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Associate Director and Manager of Youth Programs.
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate/graduate student or recent graduate in Education, International Studies, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in international exchange, youth education, and cross-cultural programming.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with social media and marketing tools a plus.
- Mandarin Chinese language skills strongly preferred but not required.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
What You Will Learn
This internship provides hands-on experience in the nonprofit education sector. As an Intern for the youth program, you will:
- Gain practical knowledge of program management, learning how to coordinate an educational project from the planning stage through successful implementation.
- Develop skills in cross-cultural communication through interactions with students, families, and partner organizations in the U.S. and China.
- Learn about curriculum design and the development of student-centered educational materials.
- Build experience in event planning and logistics, including educational conferences, events, and orientations.
- Strengthen marketing and outreach skills, particularly in engaging youth audiences and community partners.
Internship Details
- Location: In-person at China Institute, New York, NY 10006
- Commitment: Part-time, 10–20 hours per week (flexible)
- Duration: Semester-long (with possibility of extension)
- Compensation: Unpaid / For academic credit
