Over the course of the program, participants will visit iconic cities in China and explore the dynamic balance between the country’s rich historical heritage and modern advancements. They engage with diverse cultural landscapes while building strong interpersonal relationships with Chinese students and their families. YLC 2026 serves as a platform for students to expand their worldviews, forge international friendships, and embrace their roles as future global leaders.
PROGRAM FEATURES

Youth Forum:
One World, Our Future
Throughout the program, participants cultivate global competence and leadership skills through the Youth Forum organized by China Institute and local partners. As a cornerstone of the experience, the forum facilitates dynamic dialogues and presentations, allowing participants to connect with their Chinese counterparts and providing the young generation of the U.S. and China with a platform to share thoughts, voices, and ideas about their future.
Life in a Chinese
School and Home
During visits to schools, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the educational environment, fostering meaningful connections with their Chinese counterparts. Additionally, they engage in substantive interactions with Chinese families during daytime homestays. This immersive experience not only enables students to gain a deep understanding of Chinese culture and daily life but also promotes invaluable intercultural experiences that enhance communication skills.

Immersion in China’s Past and Present
Embarking on a journey through the vibrant cities across China, students will uncover the imperial grandeur of the Forbidden City, walk along the Bund to experience the dynamic energy of Shanghai, visit the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi to see how dramatic cliffs frame centuries-old Buddhist carvings. Designed to keep students engaged at every step, this itinerary presents a blend of historical, environmental, and contemporary insights, creating lasting memories for the participants.

Student Voices
“I think this experience in YLC was amazing and truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only was meeting people in China phenomenal, but even within our own group of Americans, we bonded so closely in such a short time. This was not just any trip—it helped me build new friendships, understand the culture of my heritage, and most importantly, it built my character. I learned responsibility, independence, maturity, teamwork, and to be more open-minded. Thank you so much for this unforgettable opportunity!”
— Jeffery L.
“My YLC experience was transformative. I joined the program with the sole hope of improving my Chinese proficiency, but left with that and so much more. I realized how crucial cultural immersion is to achieving fluency, and I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was in expanding my vocabulary. From the sunsets and skyline views of Shanghai, to bargaining with vendors at Yu Garden, to exploring Ningbo’s traditions, every stop gave me something new. In Taiyuan, we presented our projects at the youth forum and shared meaningful time with host families, who welcomed us like their own. In Datong, the Yungang Grottoes left me in awe. Finally, standing atop the Great Wall and exploring the Forbidden City fulfilled a lifelong dream. Beyond language, I gained intangible cultural knowledge that will stay with me forever, and I am so grateful to have gone on this incredible journey.”
— Willa Z.
“My experience at YLC was unforgettable! This program gave me a deeper understanding of Chinese traditions and everyday life. I loved learning calligraphy, practicing Tai Chi, and tasting so many delicious foods. The local hosts and teachers were so kind and welcoming, and I made friends from all over the U.S. and China. This camp helped me see the world from a new perspective, and I’m so glad I got to be part of it!”
— Valerie W.
“On my phone there are probably thousands of photos showing my excitement, gratitude, and joy from the YLC trip—an experience to remember from beginning to end. Each city offered something new: late-night laughter with friends who quickly felt like family, singing songs on the bus, trying authentic foods like xiaolongbao and noodles, and making TikToks to capture it all. Meeting international students at schools was eye-opening, as was sharing simple yet meaningful moments like making dumplings together or practicing calligraphy. From walking through bustling streets to standing before ancient landmarks, every moment blurred the lines between cultures. What made this journey truly unforgettable wasn’t just the food, art, or sights—it was the people. We exchanged not just cultures, but pieces of ourselves, creating bonds that distance can’t erase.”
— Aurelie C.
“The trip was enriching, fun, and an unforgettable experience that I will always be grateful for.”
