Lao She in London: From Chinese Language Teacher to a Writer

October 25, 2025

8:00 - 9:30 PM ET

From 1924 to 1929, the renowned modern Chinese writer Lao She taught Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies, University of London. During these five years, he not only began his literary career—completing his first three novels The Philosophy of Lao Chang, Zhao Ziyue and Mr. Ma and Son —but also co-authored one of the earliest Chinese textbooks with accompanying audio recordings, Linguaphone Chinese. This experience transformed him from an unknown young man into an established writer upon his return to China, while also marking a milestone in the history of global Chinese language education.

On the centenary of Lao She’s London appointment, the Renwen Society invites Dr. Wang Weiqun, Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham, UK, to revisit this formative period in his life. The lecture will reconstruct Lao She’s work and living environment in London, examine his teaching, colleagues, students, and daily challenges, and explore how this experience influenced his turn to literature.

By comparing Lao She’s journey with today’s Chinese language teachers in the UK, the lecture also reflects on the broader significance of his contribution to Chinese language teaching and cross-cultural exchange.
