As the first Chinese writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, Mo Yan’s literary achievements have long been recognized around the world. Yet his creative journey did not stop with the Nobel prize. On September 27, 2025, 8:00–9:30 PM EST (September 28, 8:00–9:30 AM Beijing Time), the Renwen Society will host a special lecture by Prof. Pan Geng, one of Mo Yan’s students, titled “Mo Yan After the Nobel.”
This lecture will explore three key dimensions of Mo Yan’s post-Nobel life and work. First, it will examine his evolution from novelist to dramatist, highlighting his contributions to theater, opera, and traditional Chinese stage arts, and how these works extend his reflections on human fate and social realities. Second, it will present Mo Yan as a modern-day “man of letters,” whose poetry, calligraphy, and cultural engagement embody both the classical literati spirit and contemporary humanistic concerns. His embrace of new media, such as the “Two Bricks” WeChat platform, demonstrates innovative ways of connecting with the public, while his charitable endeavors reflect a deep sense of social responsibility.
Through these perspectives, the lecture will reveal a more complex portrait of Mo Yan—one whose literary mission transcends writing to encompass cultural heritage and civic responsibility.
