On September 18—a day of infamy in modern Chinese history—China Institute invites you to a special screening that intertwines memory, art, and resilience. This year marks the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the World War II against Japanese invasion of China and the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema. To honor these milestones, we revisit the pioneering work of Wan-go Weng (1918-2020), former president of China Institute, cultural ambassador, and trailblazing documentary filmmaker.
The evening will feature two of Weng’s most significant films:
- The Battle of China (《中国之抗战》), a sweeping documentary that captures the tragedy, heroism, and unyielding spirit of the Chinese people during the war (in Chinese with English subtitles).
- A Town by the Yangtze River (《扬子江边一小城》), a poetic portrayal of ordinary life in China, offering a rare humanistic lens into the nation’s cultural heartbeat (in English).
More than a screening, this program is a dialogue across time—an opportunity to encounter history through moving images and to reflect on why these forgotten pioneers remain vital to our collective memory today.
🗓️ Date & Time: Thursday, September 18, 2025, 7:00 PM (Reception: 6:30–7:00 PM)

The Battle of China(《中国之抗战》),以宏大叙事记录中华民族抗战血泪与不屈精神(中文片,有英文字幕);
A Town by the Yangtze River(《
