Peter B. Walker

Retired as Senior Partner of McKinsey & Company, Inc.

Mr. Peter Walker retired as a Senior Partner of McKinsey & Company, Inc. in August of 2017. During his 46 years with McKinsey, he has served a wide range of financial institutions in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe on strategic, operational, and organization issues. His clients have included property-casualty, life, and multi-line companies, as well as financial service conglomerates.


For many years, Mr. Walker was the leader of McKinsey’s worldwide insurance practice and subsequently went on to lead the New York Office complex. He then served as coordinator for McKinsey’s efforts across North America, and then refocused on client work in financial services. He was a member of McKinsey’s Shareholders Committee, the Firm’s board of directors, for 15 years. For his last twelve years, Mr. Walker served financial institutions across Asia with a particular focus on insurance companies in China. He has visited China over eighty times during this period and developed a close working relationship with CIRC, the insurance regulator in China. In this capacity he co-authored a reported entitled “Promoting Sustained Economic Growth and Social Stability in China by Developing Life Insurance Industry.” He has given many speeches to top management teams of China insurers- most recently “Transforming Chinese Life Insurers to Become Consumer Centric,” at CIRC’s annual insurance summit in Shenzhen.


Since retiring from McKinsey, Mr. Walker has focused on writing a book – Powerful, Different, Equal on U.S. China relations. He has recently given two speeches on that subject – the first at a SupChina conference and the second at the Annual Wharton China Summit. Mr. Walker was also a Board member for many years of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and is a Board member of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a not-for-profit that teaches business building skills to youths in disadvantaged urban school districts across the U.S. and globally.


Before joining McKinsey, Mr. Walker was a consulting pension actuary with Towers, Perrin, Forster & Crosby, and prior to that, he was in the group insurance department at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. He graduated from Union College in 1965 with a degree in Mathematics and is an Associate in the Society of Actuaries.
